There are two parts to the filenames

• Observation
• Data reduction product

Observation

Consider: o4997g0240o.77966

• o = OTIS (Observatory, Telescope, Instrument, and Software). Nothing else possible?
• 4997 = Julian Date - 2,450,000
• g = Gigapixel Camera. Let's us know this is a PS1 observation. Though what will it be for PS4?
• 0240 = Observation sequence number
• o = object, bais, dark, flat, etc.
• 77966 = Exposure ID
