The cause: a typo in the directory name (two digits in a date that had swapped places). 

The reason: dvo silently (or perhaps non-silently, but unnnoticed by the newbie user) created the new CATDIR, which then of course didn't have any data in it.

Judging from the occasional nonsensically-named empty CATDIR that I come across on our cluster, inadvertent creation of a new CATDIR happens to every dvo user at least once.

My suggestion would be for dvo to ask before it creates an empty catdir."	enhancement	new	high		DVO	unspecified	minor
